In 1933, the National Socialist German Workers' (Nazi) Party came into power in Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. Almost immediately, the Nazi regime began implementing racist and nationalistic policies that would lead to the outbreak of World War II in 1939 and to the Holocaust, the state-sponsored persecution, imprisonment and murder of some 6 million European Jews.
