Nearly all New Yorkers are descendants of immigrants. Early immigrants came to New Netherland in search of religious freedom, a chance to create a better life, and the chance to become rich. Later settlers from many countries continued to come for many of the same reasons. The books in this kit describe the screening process that all new immigrants had to follow. Specific causes of immigration and contributions of various immigrant groups are outlined in the book.
