With the European invasion of South Africa in the early 19th century, the Black African Kingdoms became the next victim of imperial expansion. In just one day in 1879, the defenders struck a victory over the British, yet in doing so, they finally sealed their fate. Within twenty years, only Ethiopia was to remain outside colonial control.
