Examines the movement of matter into and out of living cells across a semipermeable membrane. The concepts of diffusion, osmosis, concentration gradients and active and passive transportation are explained and demonstrated. The mechanisms of the gas exchange in plants and animals are explored. Calculations are performed to illustrate the implications of the surface area to volume ratio as a limiting factor in cell size.
